A patient in Salt Lake searches “dermatologist near me.” Another one in Howrah searches the same words. Both get different results, because Google shows clinics based on where the patient is.
If your clinic has two, five or ten branches, this is the main challenge: each branch has to win in its own area. A strong website alone does not do that. Each location needs its own presence.
This guide covers 8 local SEO strategies that work for multi-location clinics in India, and the mistakes that hold most chains back.
Why multi-location SEO is different
With one clinic, you manage one profile, one address and one set of reviews. With several, three problems show up:
- Confusion: Google may not know which branch to show for which search.
- Duplication: copying the same page for every branch makes the pages look alike and weak.
- Inconsistency: different phone numbers, timings and names across listings send mixed signals.
Local rankings depend mainly on three things: relevance (does your listing match the search), distance (how close is the clinic to the patient) and prominence (how well-known and trusted is it). Every strategy below improves one of these.
1. Give every branch its own Google Business Profile
Each physical clinic that patients can visit should have its own Google Business Profile. Do not put all branches under one profile.

- Use the real clinic name, as on your board.
- Add the exact address and a pin that sits on the right spot on the map.
- Choose the right primary category for that branch’s main service.
- Set hours for that branch. Update holiday hours before festivals.
Only create a profile for a location that is actually staffed and open to patients. Virtual offices or a shared address with no clinic are against Google’s rules and can get profiles suspended.

2. Build a unique page for each location
Create one page per branch on your website, such as /clinics/salt-lake and /clinics/howrah. Each page should have its own useful content, not the same text with the area name swapped.
Include:
- full address, map, phone number and timings for that branch,
- the doctors who sit at that branch, with qualifications,
- services available there,
- how to reach it (nearby landmarks, metro or bus stops, parking),
- real photos of that clinic,
- a few FAQs patients ask about that branch,
- a clear button to call or book.
Pages that only change the city name are often called doorway pages, and they can hurt more than they help. Make each page useful to a patient who is about to visit.
3. Keep name, address and phone number consistent
Your clinic’s name, address and phone number (NAP) should be identical on your website, Google profile, Practo, Justdial and every other listing. Small differences, like “Rd” in one place and “Road” in another, or an old phone number on a directory, make it harder for Google to trust the data.
What to do:
- Create one master sheet with the exact details for each branch.
- Audit your listings every quarter.
- Fix or remove duplicate and outdated listings, especially for branches that moved or closed.
4. Target local keywords on each location page
Each location page should target the service and the area together, the way patients search:
- “skin clinic in Salt Lake”
- “dental clinic near Howrah station”
- “physiotherapy clinic in Dum Dum”
Place these naturally in the page title, the H1, the first paragraph and the headings. Do not stuff the area name into every sentence.
Keep a simple keyword map so two branch pages do not compete for the same search. If you are unsure how to choose keywords, start with the patient’s own words, not medical terms.
5. Collect reviews for every branch separately
Patients compare ratings before they call. A branch with few reviews looks less trustworthy next to a competitor with many, even if your main branch has hundreds.
- Give each branch its own review link and ask patients at the end of the visit or in a follow-up message.
- Train front-desk staff to ask politely at every branch.
- Never offer money or gifts for reviews, and do not ask only for positive ones.
- Reply to every review. Keep replies general and do not mention any treatment or health detail, even if the patient did.
6. Make the site fast and easy on mobile
Most local searches happen on a phone, often from someone who needs a clinic soon. If a location page takes too long to load or the call button is hard to find, the patient moves on to the next clinic.
- Put a tap-to-call button and a map link at the top of every location page.
- Compress images and keep pages light.
- Test pages on a normal mobile connection, not only on office Wi-Fi.
We shared how we improved one clinic site’s speed in this PageSpeed case study.
7. Add local schema markup
Schema is code that tells search engines and AI tools what is on a page. For multi-location clinics, add LocalBusiness (or a more specific type, such as MedicalClinic or Dentist) to each location page, with that branch’s name, address, phone number, hours and map coordinates. Add FAQPage where you have real FAQs.
This helps Google understand each branch clearly, and it supports your visibility in AI search tools too. Patients now ask ChatGPT and Gemini for clinic suggestions, and clear, consistent data helps. Read more in why ChatGPT recommends your competitor and not you and our AEO and GEO service page.
8. Track every branch separately
If you only look at overall numbers, you will not know which branch needs work. Track each location on its own:

- Google Business Profile: calls, direction requests and website clicks per branch.
- Website: add UTM tags to the website link on each profile so Google Analytics shows visits from each branch.
- Calls: use a separate tracking number or call log for each branch, and make sure missed calls are caught.
- Enquiries to appointments: track how many enquiries become booked visits at each clinic. See the mistakes clinics make between enquiry and appointment.
If you also run Google Ads for your clinics, run location-based campaigns around each branch and compare cost per enquiry by location.
Common mistakes to avoid
| Mistake | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| One Google profile for all branches | Google cannot match patients to the nearest clinic |
| Copy-paste location pages | Weak, duplicate content that does not rank |
| Different phone numbers or names across listings | Mixed signals, lower trust |
| Ignoring reviews at smaller branches | Lower ratings and fewer calls there |
| Keywords added to the Google profile name | Against Google’s rules, can lead to suspension |
| No tracking by branch | You cannot tell which location needs help |
A quick checklist
- Every staffed branch has its own Google Business Profile
- Every branch has a unique, useful page on the website
- Name, address and phone number match everywhere
- Each page targets one service plus area keyword
- Each branch has its own review link and reply routine
- Pages are fast on mobile with tap-to-call
- Local schema added on every location page
- Calls and enquiries tracked by branch
Final thoughts
Multi-location SEO is not about doing more. It is about doing the basics properly for each branch: a clear profile, a useful page, consistent details, fresh reviews and tracking. Start with your weakest branch, fix the first gap in the checklist, and move on to the next one. For related guides, see our posts on dental SEO and dermatology SEO.
Frequently asked questions
Does each clinic branch need its own Google Business Profile?
Yes, if the branch is a staffed location that patients can visit. Each branch should have its own profile with its own address, phone number and hours.
Can I use the same content on every location page?
It is best not to. Pages that only change the area name look like duplicates. Add each branch’s own doctors, services, directions, photos and FAQs.
How many reviews does each branch need?
There is no fixed number. Aim for a steady flow of genuine reviews at every branch, and reply to all of them.
How long does local SEO take to work for a new branch?
It depends on competition in the area and how complete your profile and page are. Some improvements show up in weeks, while others build over months. No one can promise a fixed ranking or timeline.
Should I run Google Ads for each location?
Ads can help a new branch get patients while SEO builds up. Run separate location-based campaigns and track the cost per enquiry for each branch.
Do I need schema markup?
It is not a requirement, but it helps search engines and AI tools understand each location clearly, and it is simple to add to location pages.
